February roundup

by Ayrton Galea - 1st March 2012

We are going to present you a detailed roundup of what happened in the second moth of the year, which was a positive one for our Club.

Bar October of last year, February was the best month so far in this season. ‘The Stripes' won two out of the three matches played in February. In January many considered the attacking department as the weakest one, with our forwards finding it difficult to find the net. However, in February this problem seems to have been solved as Birkirkara scored eight goals in three matches.

Matches

Birkirkara opened this month on a very bright note as on the 5 February, they registered a very comfortable 4-0 win over Balzan Youths. In what was described as the best performance of the season, Birkirkara dominated from the first whistle and without any doubt, the win was merited.

If in the first match of this month they scored four, in the second match they conceded four as they suffered a 4-1 defeat against Valletta on the 12 February. In this match, the performance was below expectations but many consider the result too harsh for Birkirkara.

Birkirkara bounced back with a 3-1 win over Tarxien Rainbows. Similar to the match against Balzan, ‘The Stripes' were the better side throughout the whole ninety minutes and there was no doubt where the three important points were going. This win meant that ‘The Stripes' will be playing for the 13th consecutive season in the Championship Pool, an achievement which no other Maltese club can claim.

Team Statistics

In the three matches played, Birkirkara won twice and lost once. Birkirkara scored eight goals and conceded five. The biggest win in this month and also for the current season was against Balzan Youths which was played on the 5 February. On the other hand, the worst defeat of this month was registered against Valletta with a 4-1 score, which was played on the 12 February.

In this month, Birkirkara scored four goals in the first half and the other four in the second half while ‘The Stripes' conceded three out of the five conceded in the second half.

The 4-0 win against Balzan Youths could be described as the biggest one because although in November, Birkirkara defeated Hamrun Spartans with the same score, Hamrun played for the last twenty minutes with one player less.

The same win over Balzan Youths meant the seventh clean sheet for Birkirkara after registering the other six against Qormi, Hamrun, Floriana, Mosta, Mqabba and Marsaxlokk respectively.

Players Statistics

Mr. Paul Zammit made use of fourteen players in total throughout these three games. In all of the games, the coach used all the three substitutions.

Moises Avila Perez scored his tenth goal in the Premier League and another one in the U*BET FA Trophy. This means he has already surpassed last year's top scorer for the Club.

In the match against Balzan Youths, Shola Shodiya and youngster Michael Camilleri scored their first goal in the Premier League. Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza also scored his first goal for our Club since rejoining the Club for the second time.

No red cards were shown to Birkirkara players in these three matches, but seven yellows cards were collected by six Birkirkara players. Gareth Sciberras collected two yellow cards in three matches.

Squad changes

Nooitmeer released

Regillio Nooitmeer who signed for our Club in the January Transfer Market asked the Club to terminate his contract due to personal reasons. The Club accepted his request and released the Dutch defender on the 6 February.

Vukanac back with Birkirkara F.C.

Following the unexpected departure of Regillio Nooitmeer, the committee signed back Nikola Vukanac on the 6 February. He made his debut on the 12 February in the 4-1 defeat against Valletta.
