Gareth Sciberras is considered one of the most hard-working midfielders on our island. His fighting spirit and determination has led him to reach the highest levels in his career. He joined our Club in the 2011 Transfer Market.
He is a San Gwann Youth Nursery product, and he joined Pieta Hotspurs in the 2000 Summer Transfer Market. He enjoyed a satisfactory first season with the Hotspurs, as he won a first-team regular place. In his first season, he made eighteen appearances.
After helping Pieta to reach the fifth place in the 2002-2003 season, which was the Club’s best position in history, Gareth scored his first two goals in the following season. He remained a regular choice in the heart of the midfield as he made twenty-six appearances.
His skills and attributes continued to stand out and Gareth was awarded the debut with the National Team after he had played for all the ranks of the National Team. He made his debut on the 11 December 2003, in the 4-0 defeat against Poland.
Gareth stayed with the Hotspurs till the end of the 2004-2005 season. In his five year spell with Pieta, he made one hundred and three appearances and he scored four goals.
He joined Premier League side Marsaxlokk FC in the 2005 Summer Transfer Market. His first season was a very satisfactory one, as he made twelve appearances and helped his side to finish in the third place, which was the highest one that the Club has ever finished.
The following 2006-2007 season remains a memorable both for Gareth and Marsaxlokk. They were crowned Champions for the first time in their history, which was also Gareth’s first major honour too. During this season, Gareth played twenty-five matches and scored two goals.
Marsaxlokk were due to play in the Maltese Premier League, however following a guilty verdict on a corruption case from the previous season, Marsaxlokk were demoted to the Maltese First Division. Despite this Gareth stayed with the club. In this season Marsaxlokk clinched the double as they won the League and the knock out of the first division.
Gareth’s last season with Marsaxlokk was the 2010-2011 season, where he played 26 matches, all starting from the start. During his six-year experience with Marsaxlokk, he won the BOV Premier League, the BOV First Division League and the BOV First Division Knockout.
He joined our Club in the 2011 Transfer Market where he signed a three-year contract on the 27 June. He made his debut just three days later in the 1-1 draw against FK Vllaznia in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.
In his first season with our Club, Gareth made 26 appearances and he started all the 26 matches. In the Premier League he managed to score two goals, one against Hibernians in the 2-2 draw which was played on the 8th January and another one against Birkirkara in the 2-0 victory registered on 15 January 2011.
The following season was even better as it remains a special one for Sciberras. He won his first major honour with Birkirkara as they were crowned Champions for the fourth time in their history, following a 3-1 victory over Hibernians in the title decider match. For him, this was his second Premier League title. In this memorable season, Gareth had 28 appearances, starting all matches from the beginning, and he managed to find the net twice.
After he had won the BOV Super Cup with our Club in the 2013-2014 season, Sciberras completed the list of all honours won with our Club at the end of the 2014-2015 season when the Stripes lifted the FA Trophy thanks to a 2-1 victory over Hibernians. In the beginning of this season, he had renewed his contract for another two seasons.
Following a very positive 2015-2016 season, where Gareth regained a regular place with both the Stripes and the National Team, he signed a new one-year contract extension with our Club on Saturday, 4 June 2016.
