Interview with Gareth Sciberras

by Ayrton Galea - 1st August 2011

For this week's interview we decided to continue introducing our new signings, so we decided to interview the International midfielder, Gareth Sciberras.

Tell us a little about yourself .

I'm 28 years old, Married to my wife Daniela and I have two daughters - Ella and Kate.

When and why did you start playing football?

I started playing at the age of 5, because all my brothers used to play.

Without any doubt, you established yourself as one of the best midfielders on the Island. In your opinion, what was the main factor that led you to this achievement?

I am very proud of what I have achieved so far in my career, as it has been a long road with a lot of ups and downs… However, I have always believed in my potential and I have been lucky to have people around me who have been very supportive.

Besides forming part of one of the best squads in Malta, you are also a key player in the National Squad. How important is it to form part of the National team, and what does it mean to you?

Representing one's country is the ultimate goal of each and every footballer. I'm so proud to have been given the opportunity to represent my country at the highest level, and I am determined to continue to fight for my place in the team so that I can gain more experience at that level.

With your former club, you were under the guidance of Mr. Patrick Curmi who then joined our Club. Did this influence your decision to join Birkirkara FC? Any other reasons why you chose to join Birkirkara FC and not another club?

The committee, especially the President, Mr. Joe Zammit, explained to me the Club's plans for the future, and these plans matched my ambitions as regards to what I personally wish to achieve in my career. I believe that Birkirkara is one the best clubs in Malta and the idea of me joining such a club, excited me. Obviously, having my previous coach as well as Peter Pullicino (ex team mate) already at the Club made my decision a little bit easier

How do you describe your relationship with the Head Coach?

I have a very good relationship with the Coach.

How do you describe your previous experiences, especially with Marsaxlokk FC?

I had a very positive spell with Marsaxlokk FC, and I am very grateful to them, as I won my only major honour in the domestic competitions with them. I spent 6 good years with the club, were I made great friends.

How do you describe your adventure with our Club so far?

I believe that I have settled down well with my team mates and I already feel part of the squad. Going away for 3 days to Albania, helped me in getting to know everyone close to the team. We have had a number of matches now, and I think the team has performed well, albeit all the changes made with new foreigners coming for trial. Hopefully, the squad will be settled soon, so that we can concentrate on the long season ahead.

Who is your best team mate?

I think, I have a good relationship with all the guys in the squad, especially since I've known some of them for quite some time as I have been playing with them in the National Team. I prefer not to mention anyone in particular, so no one gets offended .

If you had to change one thing in the Maltese football, what would it be?

That each and every player in the top division is a full time professional .

What are your comments about our present squad?

The squad boasts of some of the best local players, and this with the inclusion of quality foreigners will surely increase competition for places in the team. I believe that with the material we have, we should be very competitive and challenge for honours.

Do you think that the squad is ready or is there still need for new signings?

That is the coach's job together with the committee, however my personal opinion is that we only need to engage some good foreigners as the basis of the team seems to be set.

What are your comments on the foreign players in our team?

Mora, as everybody knows, is a very good keeper with an excellent character. The new signing, Rodrigo, seems to be a very intelligent player with a very professional attitude.

Do you consider Birkirkara FC one to be one of the main challengers for the Premier League title?

Yes, definitely.

What are your comments about our performances in the Mosta Tournament? In which game did the squad perform the best, and in which game, did you perform best?

I believe that the Mosta tournament served its cause, that is, to have a good platform to evaluate the foreigners on trial as well as to give the Coach a chance to see the local players in various positions. I believe that the team's and my best performance was against Tarxien; however I believe the team performed at a good level throughout the tournament.

What are your targets with our Club?

To be as successful as possible.

What are your future plans?

To stay away from injuries and to continue to enjoy playing football.

What are the most important things in your life?

My family.

How important are the supporters for you and do you have a message for them?

Back us through the good and bad times, as every single player will be working hard to achieve the same goal, and that is, to win.
