Matija Smrekar hails from Croatia and he was born on the 8 April 1989. He plays as a centre-forward where he is best known as a central opportunistic striker who is always found at the right place inside the box. He joined our Club in the January Transfer Market of 2016.
He played for Zagorec Krapina and Vaterks in his Youth years, while he represented Croatia in all the youth levels till the Under-21’s National Team. It was with his Youth Academy team, Varteks that he made it to Senior Team football. With the Croatian Club, he spent four successful years, till the end of the Season 2009-2010. He made sixty-nine appearances and scored sixteen goals.
Following the successful spell with Varteks, he moved out from Croatia for the first time as he joined the French side, CS Sedan. During the Season 2010-2011 he made eighteen appearances and scored three goals.
In Season 2011-2012, he moved to Belgium where he joined Royal Charleroi SC where he made twenty-two appearances and scored two goals, while in the following Season 2012-2013, he joined Slovenian’s top division side, NK Maribor. During this season, he made ten appearances, and won the PRVA Liga and the Slovenian Cup.
Following the spell with Maribor, Matija stayed in Slovenia as he joined another top division side, this time Zavrc. In his first season, in the 2013-2014, he made fifteen appearances and scored nine goals. In his second season, he found less playing time, and after making just four appearances, mid-way through the season, he moved to Romania to join CS Pandurii for the remaining of the season.
In the January Transfer Market, the Stripes were seeking to strengthen their attacking department and in the last days of the month, the choice fell of Smrekar who signed a one and a half year contract with our Club on Thursday, 28 January 2016.
Smrekar made his debut on the 14 February 2016, in the 2-0 defeat against Hibernians. The Croatian forward failed to reach the expectations as he didn’t manage to win a regular place. He made only eighth appearances and scored five goals.He was released from our Club on Friday, 10 June 2016.
