Birkirkara FC appoints new Sports Director

Birkirkara FC is delighted to announce that it has reached an agreement with John Arne Riise to take up the newly-created Sports Director role.

John shall work together with the Club Technical Director, Mr. Michael Valenzia and Senior Team Manager, Mr. Jeffrey Farrugia in a new set-up which shall commence with immediate effect.

Further details of the clubs plans for the future shall be published in the next few days.

John Arne Riise – Playing Career

John had a wonderful playing career as he is the most capped player for the Norway National Team with 110 appearances. He is well-known for his successful spell with Premier League side, Liverpool FC where he won several honours including the UEFA Champions League in 2005.

He began his career with homeland Aelesund. In his first season as a senior team player, he made twenty-five appearances and scored five goals. He moved to the French club, Monaco where he spent three seasons and made fourty-four appearances while scoring four goals.

Riise moved to Liverpool FC in summer 2001 for the sum of four million. With Liverpool, he had the best spell in his career as he spent seven successful years that saw him winning the UEFA Super Cup in 2001, the UEFA Champions League in 2005 and the FA Cup in 2006.

He is one of the top 50 Liverpool appearance-makers of all time. Throughout the seven years with the reds, he two-hundred-and-thirty-four appearances while scoring twenty-one goals. He moved to Italian Seria A side, AS Roma in August 2008.

John spent three seasons with AS Roma, where he became a fans' favourite. He made a total of ninety-nine appearances and scored three goals. He moved back to the Premier League to sign with Fulham FC. With Fulham, he made eighty-seven appearances.

In Season 2014-2015, he joined Cypriot Club, APOEL FC. This was a memorable season as the Cypriot club won their third consecutive league title and the Cypriot club. This was his second league title won, fifteen years after winning the French league with AS Monaco.

In his final three short spells of his playing career, he moved to India to join Delhi Dynamos before returning to the club he started his career with, Aalesunds FK. Following a break from football, he joined Chennaiyin FC in India where he made ten appearances in his final season.
