Birkirkara to face Sliema in first match of AME Cup
by Ayrton Galea - 21st July 2012Birkirkara and Sliema Wanderers will kick off the AME Cup tomorrow evening when they cross swords in the first match of the competition.
Birkirkara's preparations for the upcoming Premier League are already in an advanced stage as they have already played five matches. Following the three matches in the Euro Cup, Birkirkara were involved in the First Qualifying Round of the Europa League where two positive performances were not enough for them to qualify as opponents Metalurg Skopje advanced with a 2-2 aggregate thanks to the away goal rule.
On the other hand, Sliema Wanderers are at an earlier stage of their pre-season with the main reason being that ‘The Blues' did not qualify for any of the European Competition. So far they have played two friendly matches. First they were held by Qormi in a 2-2 draw, while in the second friendly match they defeated Mosta with a 2-0 score thanks to a brace by Miguel Ciantar.
Last season these two teams met four times in the Premier League. Birkirkara won and drew once and were beaten twice. In the first two rounds, Sliema registered a narrow 1-0 win, the third round ended in a 1-1 draw, while the fourth round Birkirkara easily beat Sliema with a score of 4-1.
Following playing with a very experimental squad in the third match of the Euro Cup against Valletta, where Mr. Zammit gave the chance to several youngsters, this cup should serve for the First Team to continue building and preparing for the upcoming difficult Premier League, and to give another opportunity for the promising youngsters.
The match will be played at the Luxol Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 18:30.
