Interview with Shaun Bajada
by Ayrton Galea - 17th January 2011After last Saturday's match where 'The Stripes' were beaten by Marsaxlokk 2-0, we decided to interview the MFA Footballer of the Year, Shaun Bajada.
We opened this interview with Shaun by asking for his thoughts about the last match. He told us "It was a difficult match for us, and I think that the team had a very poor performance as only in few occasions we managed to create scoring opportunities, but these are situations that sometimes happen in football."
Then, we changed the subject to the long streak of injuries that several players suffered, including Shaun himself. He replied, "I think that the injuries are the biggest cause of these type of performances, but I still believe that with the quality of players that the coach has at his disposal it is still a strong enough team to face any opponent."
So far Shaun is not having a great season with Birkirkara and he does not seem to have reached last year's level. We asked Shaun for his comments about this and he replied "Yes, I agree that I have not reached last year's form and obviously I am not happy with this. But the game of football is played as a team and that is why when I was awarded as the Footballer of the Year I never stopped thanking my team mates, because when we win, it is Birkirkara FC that wins, and the same happens when we lose."
We asked Shaun if he is effected by negative criticism from the supporters. He answered, "I am like everybody else, in the sense that nobody enjoys ugly comments. However, I do accept and understand that during the match the supporters feel frustrated and they would want a win, as much as we do."
We switched our discussion to our standings in the Premier League, and if this defeat meant that the title race is over for Birkirkara. Shaun's comments were, "Now the situation is difficult because when you depend on others it is never easy. However like everyone knows in the Maltese Premier League the points are halved and if we manage to close in on Valletta, everything is possible."
Shaun concluded this interview with a message to the Birkirkara supporters. "Stay always behind the team whatever happens and keep believing in this team and our coach. We have a group of players that have an impeccable character and a great potential."
